Hampton gets gift from Palmetto Electric; Town Council

HAMPTON—History and the Town of Hampton received a generous gift Tuesday night.

During the Hampton Town Council meeting, Palmetto Electric Cooperative officials were on hand to donate $4,000 to be used to paint and renovate the exterior of the Hampton “Old Colored School” Museum.

“Palmetto Electric really gets involved in community, and one of our core values is community,” said Palmetto President and CEO Berl Davis, Jr. “We appreciate the relationship we have with the town.”

Of that donation, $1,000 comes from Palmetto Electric Cooperative, while $3,000 comes from the Palmetto Trust fund, which is funded by the Operation Roundup program.

In other business, Council:

-Announced that the next Promise Zone meeting will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 23, at Market Square in Varnville.

-Approved $295 to sponsor the Watermelon Festival Parade television airing on WTOC TV in Savannah.

-Approved the purchase of a truck at auction from Palmetto Electric for $10,000.

-Approved $9,500 to pay the first half of the bill for the annual town audit report.

-Agreed to donate a United States flag and a South Carolina flag, with two pedestals, to the Hampton County Library.

-Gave second and final reading to a new cost recovery ordinance, which enables the town fire department to recoup some of its expenses when responding to wrecks and hazardous materials calls.

-After meeting in closed session, Council voted to give Chezerai MclClorn a $45,000, six-year Community Development Block Grant business loan to purchase the Mellon Patch daycare in Hampton. The purchase is expected to be complete this summer.
